World Teachers Day: Celebrating the heart of education
by Andrew Croydon, ABPI Director, Education and Examination Policy
Every day, across the globe, hundreds of thousands of teachers dedicate their time to bringing quality education to students.
From the first smile that greets children at the school gate, to the way they inspire curiosity and a love for learning, teachers play an irreplaceable role in shaping the next generation.
As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day (5 October 2024), we commend their dedication and recognise the lasting impact they have on young lives.
Most people remember a great teacher from their days at school. We all have one—an amazing person who was not just a teacher to us; they were a mentor, a confidante, and a lasting role model. These are the golden people who provide the supportive environment children need to feel safe enough to explore and express themselves. They help break down barriers, whether social, economic, or cultural, and open doors to opportunities that might otherwise remain closed.
In every lesson, those same great teachers bring enthusiasm, care, and a belief that every child has the potential to succeed, no matter their background. Looking beyond academic skills, teachers play an essential role in spotting students' real potential. Helping them discover their interests and strengths. Guiding them toward brighter futures.
The role of a teacher goes beyond sharing knowledge. Teachers nurture, encourage, and inspire. These elusive skills have never been more important. The education landscape is constantly changing, with new challenges and technologies. Teachers need continued support to help them to do their job well and enable children to thrive.
At the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), we share the belief in the power of education. We are committed to investing in education because we know that it is an investment in the future – one which will always return more then you put in.
As part of our investment in future talent, we offer free STEM teaching resources designed to support teachers in delivering inspiring lessons and encouraging enquiring minds. The ABPI Schools website provides teachers with high quality, free, curriculum related, interactive resources for students aged from five years old all the way up to 16+.
We know that teachers truly bring these materials to life. Their energy, creativity, and dedication to making learning an exciting journey for students is what sparks the curiosity needed to power a passion for lifelong learning.
So, on this important day, we want to take a moment to thank all teachers for the incredible work you do. Every interaction with students, every lesson prepared, and every challenge you help overcome, contributes to a future where children can thrive.
Thank you for inspiring, encouraging, and supporting young minds - today and every day.
